Fall Family Picture Tips for 2026: Everything You Need to Know Before Your Session
Tips for your Fall Family Photos in 2026.
Fall is one of the most beautiful times of year in Indiana. The golden light, changing leaves, cozy sweaters, and cooler evenings create the perfect setting for timeless family photographs.
As a family photographer serving Marion, Fort Wayne, and Central Indiana, one of the questions I hear most often is:
"How do we prepare for our family pictures?"
The good news is that preparing for your session doesn't have to be stressful. A little planning ahead goes a long way and allows your family to simply enjoy being together when your session arrives.
Here are my favorite tips to help you prepare for a relaxed, beautiful fall family session.
1) Book Your Session Early
Fall is the busiest season of the year for family photography.
The best dates disappear quickly, especially once the leaves begin changing colors. If you're hoping for golden fields, colorful trees, or that dreamy sunset glow, I always recommend reserving your session well in advance.
Booking early also gives you plenty of time to plan outfits, coordinate schedules, and enjoy the process instead of feeling rushed.
2) Start Planning Your Outfits Early
One of the biggest mistakes families make is waiting until the week of their session to think about clothing.
Instead, begin planning your wardrobe several weeks ahead. This gives you time to shop, exchange sizes if needed, and make sure everything coordinates beautifully.
The goal isn't to match—it's to coordinate.
3) Color Palette Inspiration for Your Fall Family Pictures
One of the easiest ways to create a timeless, cohesive look is to choose four or five colors that complement one another and repeat them throughout everyone's outfits. The goal isn't to have everyone wearing the same thing—it's to create balance with a palette that feels natural and connected.
Here are a few of my favorite combinations for fall family sessions:
Palette One | Warm & Timeless
Cream
Camel
Warm Brown
Olive Green
Soft Denim
Perfect for fields, parks, and wooded locations with golden light.
Palette Two | Cozy Autumn
Ivory
Chocolate Brown
Taupe
Muted Rust
Sage Green
A beautiful choice for peak fall color and families wanting rich, earthy tones.
Palette Three | Soft & Elegant
Cream

This palette creates an airy, luxurious look that feels timeless and works beautifully in both outdoor and studio settings.
Palette Four | Earthy Neutrals

A classic combination that photographs beautifully in forests, nature preserves, and open fields.
Palette Five | Warm Neutrals

This palette feels cozy without becoming overly seasonal and complements Indiana's golden fall landscape beautifully.
Palette Six | Classic Denim & Neutrals

One of my favorite combinations for families with young children because it's comfortable, effortless, and never goes out of style.
Palette Seven | Rich Fall Tones

Palette Eight | Neutral & Organic

This palette creates a calm, natural feel and photographs beautifully in almost any location.
4) A Few Tips When Choosing Your Colors
- Choose Mom's outfit first, then build everyone else's wardrobe around it.
- Mix textures like knit sweaters, linen, corduroy, cotton gauze, and denim to add depth without adding busy patterns.
- Limit everyone to one or two colors from the palette instead of wearing every color at once.
- Browns don't all need to match. Mixing lighter and darker shades creates dimension and makes your gallery feel effortless.
- If you're unsure, cream and warm browns are almost always a beautiful place to start.
Remember, your family's love and connection should always be the first thing people notice. The right color palette simply enhances the story you're already telling.
Start With Mom's Outfit
When planning family outfits, always begin with Mom.
Choose something that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and beautiful. Once you've selected your outfit, it's much easier to build everyone else's wardrobe around it.
Flowy dresses, soft sweaters, and neutral layers photograph wonderfully while adding movement and elegance to your images.
Mix Textures Instead of Matching
One of my favorite ways to create timeless images is by mixing textures rather than matching everyone in identical outfits.
Consider incorporating:
- Chunky knit sweaters
- Linen
- Cotton gauze
- Knit cardigans
- Corduroy
- Waffle knit
- Soft denim
These textures create depth and interest without distracting from your family's connection.
Add Layers
Layers instantly make photographs feel cozy and polished.
Think:
- Cardigans
- Knit sweaters
- Denim jackets
- Shawls
- Vests
- Brown leather boots
- Felt hats for older children or dads
Layers also add variety to your gallery without changing outfits.
Think About Your Home
One of my favorite pieces of advice is simple:
Choose colors you'd decorate your home with.
Your photographs become artwork that you'll enjoy for years to come. Soft neutrals and earthy tones blend beautifully into almost any home while remaining timeless.
5) What Not to Wear
To keep the attention on your family instead of your clothing, I recommend avoiding:
- Neon colors
- Bright logos
- Graphic T-shirts
- Athletic clothing
- Busy prints
- Character clothing
- Matching everyone exactly
- Clothing that is too tight or too loose
Simple, coordinated clothing always photographs beautifully.
6) Schedule Haircuts Ahead of Time
If anyone in your family needs a haircut, try scheduling it one to two weeks before your session.
This gives hair time to settle naturally while still looking fresh.
7) Avoid New Beauty Treatments
A few days before your session isn't the best time to experiment.
I recommend avoiding:
- Spray tans
- Chemical peels
- New skincare treatments
- Hair color you've never tried before
- First-time eyebrow waxing or shaping
Stick with what you know works well for you.
8) Make Sure Everyone Is Rested
Well-rested children are happier children.
Try to keep naps as normal as possible, eat before your session, and bring water along with a few non-messy snacks just in case.
A relaxed child almost always leads to more natural photographs.
If your baby or toddler is still napping, adjust their nap a little later so they can stay up and not crash as hard during pictures. Snacks help too.
9) Skip the "Smile!" Reminders
One of the best things you can do is simply tell your children you're going to spend time together as a family.
There is no pressure for perfect smiles.
We'll play.
We'll cuddle.
We'll laugh.
We'll explore.
Some of the most meaningful photographs happen in the moments between the smiles.
10) Arrive a Little Early
Plan to arrive about ten minutes before your session begins.
Having a few extra minutes allows everyone to relax, settle in, and start the session without feeling rushed.
11) Trust the Process
If your toddler wants to run...
If your baby doesn't want to sit still...
If someone gets a little silly...
That's okay.
Those moments are part of your family's story.
Some of my favorite photographs happen when families stop worrying about perfection and simply enjoy being together.
12) These Moments Won't Last Forever
Years from now, your children won't remember whether every hair stayed perfectly in place.
They won't notice if someone had dirt on their shoe.
They'll remember the hugs.
The laughter.
The way you held their hand.
The way you looked at them.
Those are the moments worth preserving.
